1) Read the class syllabus! This will let you know all the rules regarding absences, grades, etc.
2) Be on time for class! In fact, always try to be a little early, so you can get ready.
3) Don't miss class unless you are sick (nobody wants your germs! 8-) ). Your teacher can explain something to you in a fraction of the time that it would take you to figure it out on your own (or even with the help of a tutor.)
4) If you do have to miss a class, always call a classmate (before you return to class!) to find out what you missed and what the homework is.
5) Take very neat class notes. Write down everything the teacher writes down and try to write down most of what he/she says. In your notes put stars by problems or points that your teacher stresses or get excited about. These are good potential test questions!
6) If the teacher is making some sort of computation, work along with her/him.
7) Participate and ask questions!
8) Do your homework the same day that you have the lesson on the material! If that isn't possible, always be sure to do the homework before you go to the next class.
9) Before you do your homework, review your class notes first. If you get stuck on a problem and don’t know what to do – at least copy the problem or the main facts of the word problem and try. After you complete the assignment, check your odd answers in the back of the book. Then any that you don’t get correct, work a little harder on. Work backwards, look over your notes again, even refer to examples in your textbook. The teacher may assigns odd number problems so you can check answers in the back of the book!
10) Study for quizzes & tests by actually working through problems – a lot of problems and check to be sure you are getting the right answer. The more you do, the more fluent you will be with the material!
11) The second that you start to feel overwhelmed with the material (ex: you didn't understand a thing the teacher said or you can't do the assignment that night) get help! See your teacher for extra help, ask for help from a classmate.
12) Get in the proper frame of mind! This class is your job. How much effort are you putting forth? If this class was reallyyour job, would you get fired or would you be up for a raise?
